Chocolate mousse is the ultimate French-inspired dessert, striking the perfect harmony between richness and lightness. Its name, “mousse,” literally means “foam” in French, and this dessert delivers exactly that—an airy, melt-in-the-mouth experience with every spoonful.

Unlike heavy puddings or cakes, chocolate mousse relies on whipped cream and beaten egg whites to create its signature fluffy texture, while rich dark chocolate provides an intense cocoa depth that makes it unforgettable.

Part of the appeal of chocolate mousse is its versatility. It can be dressed up for fine dining in crystal glasses with shaved chocolate, or kept rustic in simple ramekins for a comforting homemade treat.

What makes it particularly special is its make-ahead convenience: you can prepare it a day in advance and let the fridge work its magic. Elegant yet simple, chocolate mousse is the kind of timeless dessert that feels luxurious without being complicated—a true classic in the world of sweets.

Silky Classic Chocolate Mousse with Whipped Cream Topping

Ingredients

  • 200g (7 oz) dark chocolate (70% cocoa), chopped

  • 3 large eggs, separated

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 1/4 cups heavy cream, divided

  • Pinch of salt

Directions

  1. Melt chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water (double boiler method). Stir until smooth and let cool slightly.

  2. In a clean bowl, whisk egg yolks with vanilla until pale. Stir into the melted chocolate.

  3. In another bowl, beat egg whites with a pinch of salt until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar and whisk to stiff peaks.

  4. In a separate bowl, whip 1 cup of the heavy cream to soft peaks.

  5. Gently fold whipped cream into the chocolate mixture, followed by egg whites, folding carefully to keep the mousse airy.

  6. Spoon into serving glasses or ramekins and chill for at least 2 hours.

  7. Before serving, whip the remaining 1/4 cup cream and dollop on top. Optionally garnish with shaved chocolate or berries.
